In the fiscal year 2021, demand from Chinese farmers drove the emergence of an agricultural supplies market that surpassed RMB10 billion on Taobao. This still-growing market includes seedlings, fertilizers, agricultural machinery, greenhouse coverings and livestock supplies among others things.
To meet this consumption demand, there are currently close to 50,000 agriculture tools sellers on Taobao, providing more than 18 million products annually to help farmers reap greater success on their fields. This growth reflects the continuous improvement of China’s logistics infrastructure, which has allowed the smooth delivery of agricultural products to the country’s rural areas. Currently, 56% of consumers of Taobao’s agricultural supplies come from counties and villages from less developed regions, with Henan, Sichuan, Yunnan, Guangxi and Shandong being among the major provinces for purchasing such goods.
Not only has Taobao given farmers a fast and convenient way to access a wide range of products, the e-commerce platform has also turned into a treasure trove of agricultural knowledge, with many stores offering tips, educational livestreams, Q&A sessions, interactive buyer shows and customer-service consultations catered specifically for farmers.
