Despite being overseas, Chinese consumers can still enjoy Chinese New Year Shopping Festival through Tmall Taobao World. In fact, many shoppers who live abroad have been using the e-commerce platform to buy Spring Festival essentials, including festive decorations, supplies, traditional clothing and even mini karaoke machines.
According to data from Tmall Taobao World, from Jan. 20-25, overseas consumers bought more than 40,000 traditional Chinese outfits, known as tangzhuang, including many for young children. This period also saw the sales of 360,000 sets of red envelopes.
With many unable to travel home to celebrate this year, demand for regional food products and domestic brands has soared as shoppers turn to Tmall Taobao World as a way to connect with home while abroad. Massage devices from homegrown brand Bo Luo Jun and cosmetics from Perfect Diary have become especially popular in the lead-up to Chinese New Year. Meanwhile, in Singapore, Chinese shoppers have shown a craving for crayfish; in Malaysia, they are spending on beauty products; in Japan, hanfu – or traditional Chinese outfit – are the big sellers; and in Canada, mini karaoke machines are proving to be a hit choice for stay-at-home entertainment.
